Wesley Heights

Wesley Heights is a 1910s and 1920s streetcar-era neighborhood just west of Uptown, close enough to walk to the stadium. It is a local historic district with an intact bungalow stock and a considerable amount of new construction on the lots between.

Orientation

Where it sits

Wesley Heights lies immediately west of Uptown, on the far side of I-77 from the center city, bounded roughly by West Trade Street, Freedom Drive, and the Stewart Creek corridor.

It is one of the closest residential neighborhoods to Uptown by distance — Bank of America Stadium is a walk rather than a drive — and that proximity is the engine behind everything happening here now.

Portions of the neighborhood carry local historic district designation, which means exterior changes to designated properties go through review.

Housing

Bungalows and what is going up beside them

The original stock is Craftsman bungalows and small period cottages from the 1910s and 1920s, on modest lots with front porches and sidewalks. Many have been fully renovated; a portion still has not.

New construction is heavy and ongoing — detached infill and townhome rows built on vacant lots and on parcels where original houses came down. Scale, height, and materials vary considerably depending on whether a property fell inside the historic district boundary.

That boundary is the thing to check first on any address here. It determines what you can change, what review you face, and in practice what the block around you will look like in five years.

Day to day

What is nearby

The CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar runs west from Uptown along Trade Street, giving the neighborhood a direct rail connection to the center city and east to Elizabeth.

Camp North End — a large adaptive reuse of a former manufacturing complex, with food, retail, offices, and events — sits a short distance north and has become the area's main destination.

The Stewart Creek and Irwin Creek greenways run through and near the neighborhood, and the Charlotte Rail Trail is reachable through Uptown.
